England Squad Employs Advanced Cooling Tech to Combat World Cup Heat in the US
England’s team is adopting cutting-edge cooling devices and fitness trackers during their US training camp to prepare for intense heat ahead of the World Cup.
The England football team is integrating innovative cooling technology and monitoring equipment as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, where game temperatures frequently exceed 35 degrees Celsius. This initiative aims to help players manage heat stress and maintain optimal performance during matches and training sessions.
Each player has been equipped with a fitness tracker, the Whoop device, which complies with FIFA regulations and tracks vital signs such as heart rate, temperature, and breathing both on and off the pitch. This data-driven approach allows the coaching staff to closely monitor players’ physiological responses under extreme heat, enabling timely interventions to avoid overheating and improve recovery.
The team is also trialing technology designed to cool the body’s core quickly. Among these innovations are high-tech palm cooling devices—already used by clubs like Manchester United during training—which cool key pulse points to reduce core temperature. These devices, priced around £800 each, will be employed during warm-up friendlies and matches, starting with the upcoming game against New Zealand. Cooling vests and structured hydration breaks complement these efforts to manage heat stress.
England’s manager Thomas Tuchel views their Florida base at the Palm Beach Gardens Tennis & Pickleball Centre as an ideal setting for a “mini boot camp” that will help players adapt to challenging weather conditions. Midfielder Jordan Henderson emphasized the importance of gradually building tolerance to heat through exposure and training, reflecting on his experience playing in similarly hot climates. He highlighted the extensive support system behind the team, focusing on cutting-edge research into cooling and recovery strategies aimed at gaining a competitive edge during the tournament.
