Llandudno Strengthens Grip on North Wales Cricket League with Key Wins in Divisions 1 and 4
Llandudno secured their seventh consecutive victory in Division 1, while Mochdre’s Owen Opie shone with a career-best score during a dramatic run chase in Division 4.
Llandudno continues to dominate the North Wales Cricket League, marking their seventh straight win in Division 1 by narrowly defeating Gresford in a tense contest. After restricting Gresford to 186 for 9, Llandudno’s middle order revived the innings from a precarious 85 for 4, with vital partnerships that saw them reach 187 for 6 and seal the victory before the full 45 overs elapsed.
Meanwhile, in Division 4, Mochdre staged an impressive chase to overcome Northop’s imposing total. Opener Owen Opie delivered a standout performance, scoring an unbeaten 113, his career-best, guiding Mochdre to 274 for 4 in response to Northop’s 273 for 5. Northop had laid a solid foundation with opener James Roberts’ century and support from Charley Greig and skipper Chris Brooks, but Mochdre’s resilience prevailed in the end.
Other Division 1 matches featured some notable individual efforts and tactical bowling. Abergele set a modest total of 153 before bowling out Bethesda for 103, with Ben Parker leading the bowling attack. Connah’s Quay registered a high-scoring win over Buckley, powered by Anro Burger’s maiden century and Rhys Stout’s aggressive 69. Halkyn also secured a convincing 60-run victory against Conwy, anchored by strong opening stands from Matthew Towey and captain Ben Roberts.
Key bowling performances included Champika Piyarathna’s three wickets for Abergele and multiple wicket hauls for Andrew Day and Gareth J Edwards. In Gresford’s innings, Simon Perry and Vishak Kartha captured crucial wickets, but their efforts fell short against Llandudno’s batting resilience. This blend of competitive batting and effective bowling across the league underlines the ongoing intensity of the season.
The continued sponsorship support for regional clubs was highlighted by Carmel’s announcement of Weetabix as their first-team shirt sponsor, symbolizing growing community engagement in grassroots cricket across North Wales.
