Glen Johnson urges Chelsea to pursue Arsenal transfer target Julian Alvarez
Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has called on the club to prioritize signing Julian Alvarez, who is also a top target for Arsenal and currently at Atletico Madrid.
Glen Johnson has encouraged Chelsea to make Julian Alvarez their top summer signing, arguing the Argentine striker would be an ideal fit to strengthen the Blues' attack. Alvarez, currently at Atletico Madrid, is also being pursued by Arsenal as they seek to build on their Premier League title success. Chelsea’s need for a proven goal scorer has become more urgent following a disappointing season and a 10th place finish.
Atletico Madrid is determined to keep Alvarez amid increasing interest from clubs like Arsenal and Barcelona, though the Spanish club recently dismissed any intention to negotiate with the Catalan side. Arsenal has already engaged with Alvarez’s agent, aiming to bolster their frontline alongside targets like Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s interest in Alvarez was noted earlier this year, highlighting the striker’s prior experience in the Premier League during his time with Manchester City.
Chelsea’s current options have not fully delivered; Joao Pedro ended last season with 20 goals but a natural number nine remains elusive, as striker Liam Delap managed only two goals. Johnson emphasized that to compete at the top level, Chelsea must have an out-and-out striker capable of consistently scoring, able to win games in critical moments. He described Alvarez as a hardworking, well-rounded striker who fits this role perfectly.
Johnson suggested Chelsea pursue a sensible transfer deal, possibly involving player exchanges, to secure Alvarez’s services. With Xabi Alonso now leading the club’s rebuilding efforts, acquiring a striker like Alvarez would excite the fans and address a glaring need in the squad ahead of the new season.
