Manchester United Confirm Rasmus Hojlund’s £38 Million Transfer to Napoli
Manchester United have finalized the permanent transfer of Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli after his loan spell, ending speculation around his future at Old Trafford.
Manchester United have completed the permanent transfer of forward Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli following his loan stint in Serie A, with the Italian club obliged to make the deal official after securing Champions League qualification. Napoli paid €44 million (£38 million) to acquire Hojlund after initially loaning him for a season at a cost of €6 million (£5.2 million).
During his loan season, the 23-year-old Danish striker delivered a solid return of 12 goals and 6 assists in 33 league appearances, helping Napoli finish second in Serie A and win the Supercoppa Italiana. He also made 44 appearances across all competitions, scoring 16 goals. His form in Italy contrasts with his challenges at Manchester United, where he had a more modest impact.
Hojlund initially joined Manchester United from Atalanta in the summer of 2023. Over two seasons, he scored 26 goals in 95 appearances and was part of the FA Cup-winning squad in May 2024, contributing as a substitute in the final against Manchester City at Wembley.
Michael Owen previously argued that Hojlund’s difficulty in establishing himself at Old Trafford was largely due to the team's broader struggles rather than his personal ability. Owen suggested that United’s lack of cohesion and poor service stalled forwards like Hojlund and fellow striker Benjamin Sesko, making it difficult to fairly assess their talents while the team was underperforming.
In a statement, Manchester United acknowledged Hojlund’s contribution and wished him well for the future, highlighting his boyhood connection to the club and his role in recent successes. The club confirmed the transfer as final, ending any possibility of Hojlund returning to Old Trafford.
