Manchester United Close to Signing Ederson as First Transfer of Carrick Era
Manchester United have agreed a deal to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson, marking their first signing under Michael Carrick as Casemiro's exit leaves a midfield gap.
Manchester United have reached an agreement with Serie A club Atalanta to secure midfielder Ederson, making him the first addition under the new tenure of Michael Carrick. This move comes as United prepare to reinforce their midfield following the departure of Casemiro, whose contract expires this summer.
The transfer deal involves an initial fee of €40.5 million (£35 million), with potential add-ons amounting to €4.5 million (£3.8 million). Ederson, 26, impressed in Serie A this past season and is expected to bring physicality, speed, and ball control to United’s midfield, qualities praised by former Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek, who faced him in Italy.
While there has been consideration of Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni as a target, some experts suggest United should also prioritize strengthening their attack. Former United coach Rene Meulensteen highlighted the need for an experienced striker, referencing the appeal of Harry Kane, though acknowledging the difficulty of signing him this summer. Instead, Meulensteen proposes alternatives like Jean-Philippe Mateta, a striker with Premier League experience, and emerging talents like Kerim Alajbegovic from RB Salzburg. However, he cautioned that introducing young forwards requires careful assessment due to the Premier League’s challenging nature.
The club’s transfer activities this summer signal a clear intent to rebuild key positions as they look to compete effectively in the coming seasons. Ederson’s signing aims to plug the midfield void immediately, but further moves, particularly in the striker role, remain under consideration to boost United’s competitive edge.
